ThAct:- Absalom and Achitophel

TOPIC OF THE BLOG:-

The blog is a part of a Thinking Activity thAct:- A&A by John Dryden and given by Dilip sir (Click here for Dilip Barad's Blog) from English Department MKBU, Bhavnagar. In this blog I am going to discuss some questions from question bank of A&A given in Material website (Click here). For lactures and video on A&A by Dilip sir Click here.

JOHN DRYDEN:-

The whole age is know by his name Dryden, Age of Dryden. He was restoration age playwright, poet, literary critic, Librettist and translator also of England. After John Donne and John Milton he was considered as a greatest English poet of the 17th century and after William Shakespeare and Ben Johnson he was considered as greatest playwright of the age. He was born on 9 August (19 August) 1631 in Aldwincle, Northamptonshire, England and died on 12 may 1700 in London, England. He was appointed as a first poet laureate of the England in 1668.  On 1 December 1663 Dryden married Lady Elizabeth Howard. Both Dryden and his wife were warmly attached to their children. They had three sons: Charles (1666-1704), John (1668-1701), and Erasmus Henry (1669-1710).

NOTABLE WORKS OF DRYDEN:-

  • Absalom and Achitophel (1681)
  • Annus Mirabilis (1667)
  • Astraea Redux (1660)
  • Aureng-Zebe (1675)
  • Fables Ancient and Modern (1700)
  • King Arthur (Librettist and lyricist, John Dryden) (1691)
  • All for Love (1677)
  • Mac Flecknoe (1678)
  • Marriage à-la-Mode (1673)
  • Of Dramatic Poesie, an Essay (1668)
  • Religio Laici; or A Layman’s Faith (1682)
  • Secret Love, or the Maiden Queen (1668)
  • The Conquest of Granada of the Spaniards (1670)
  • The Hind and the Panther (1687)
  • The Indian Emperour (1665)
  • The Indian Queen (1664)
  • The Medall (1682)
  • The Wild Gallant (1669)
  • To His Sacred Majesty (1661)

DRYDEN AS THE FIRST COMPARATIVE AND NATIONALISTIC CRITIC:-

Dryden added a new dimension to criticism by introducing method of comparative analysis. His comparative study of Greek, Roman, French and English writers shows his knowledge and his sensitivity to literature. Scott James writes in this regard; "Dryden had not only read and digested Sophocles and Euripides, Theocritus and Virgil (Tragedians); he had also read and digested Shakespeare, Ben Johnson and Fletcher." Dryden compares modern literature with Greek and Latin. He said that the difference between classical literature and English literature is not only that of language. To him, is that time passes the development of state, the taste and the character of people changes notably.

ABSALOM AND ACHITOPHEL:-

Poem:- Absalom and Achitophel

Poet:- John Dryden

Published:- 1681

Setting:- Israel, during the reign of King David

Era:- Restoration Age

Genre:- Satire, Poetry

Rhyme Scheme:- Heroic Couplet

Antagonist:- Achitophel

Point of View: Third-Person Omniscient

Rhyme Scheme:- AABB - Imbic Pentameter

For the original poem Visit Poetry Foundation (Click here).

In Preface of Absalom and Achitophel Dryden claims that he is mere  a historian but we can found through this poem that he created biblical story. Absalom and David are thinly veiled metaphors for Charles II of England and his illegitimate son, James Scott, 1st Duke of Monmouth. In the poem, Dryden implies that the real-life story of Charles and Monmouth is not yet over, and there is plenty of time for wisdom and mercy. (litcharts)

Dryden based his work on a biblical incident recorded in 2 Samuel 13–19. These chapters relate the story of King David’s favourite son Absalom and his false friend Achitophel (Ahithophel), who persuades Absalom to revolt against his father. (Britannica)

🌸 The second part of the poem is written by Nahum Tate (1652-1715) in 1682 and Dryden added some finishing lines.

THEMES OF THE ABSALOM AND ACHITOPHEL:-

As we can see how this poem related to politics, has perfect allegory and satire on characters, satire on religion, and satire on king and monarchy. Even though he says that he is not on the side of kings, he appreciate ABSALOM in this poem. Politics in a way that, how he made a conspiracy against his own father. It is a element of politics, politics not only seen in society but can visible in our life too.
Absalom has ambition to take all the power he sees in front of his eyes. He wants throne and that's why he kill his own father.
The story of this poem related to biblical story. And that's why there is a theme of God in the poem. According to him God was the first king of Israel and soul was the second.

🍀SAHDEV AND NAKUL:-

🍀DURYODHANA:-

SCENE 1

EVERYONE GETTING READY FOR  युद्ध

(Enters Sahdev, Yudhishthir, Arjun, Bhim, Nakul and Drupadi)

SAHDEV:- Excuse me! Excuse me! My dear brothers first tell me

Don't you know why we are going to fight?

SAHDEV:- No dude.

Long time ago, I mean when

BHIM:- That's true. I am settled, bro.

YUDHISHTHIR:- Guys, Guys Chill! This is not only for women sake.

(Enters KRISHNA)

KRISHNA:- Exactly, you are right Yudhishthir. But as per future myth

DRAUPADI:- Wait, I want to go too.

DRAUPADI:- O Mistress Mine! I mean husband mine. I totally agree with you. I want revange. क्यों कृष्णा, am I right know?

KRISHNA:- Hain, I understand sista,

DRAUPADI:- That's the thing my dear brother. Be open minded. If I can marry 5 people at the same time and can bear insult and attemption of repe,

ARJUN AND BHIM:- As you wish,

SCENE 2

(In युद्ध मैदान)

(Enters DURYODHANA AND DRAUPADI)

DURYODHANA:-  Huh!! What a Pity!!

One of the most important reason of this युद्ध is तेरी हसी, जो मेरे गिरने पर लक्षागृह में उस दिन तू हसी थी।

DRAUPADI:- I can't forget that brother from another mother.

(Enters BHIM)

DRAUPADI:- Ohohohoho!!!

(BHIM almost killed DURYODHANA while talking with DRAUPADI)

BHIM:- Shut up!!

Movie Review:- Frankenstein

TOPIC OF THE BLOG:-

In this blog I am going to review a movie name Frankenstein based on the Novel 'Frankenstein; or the modern Prometheus By Marry Shelley In 1818. This blog is a part of a Thinking Activity given By Yesha Bhatt from English Department, MKBU.

This is a link of Yesha Bhatt's Blog (Click Here).

1994

PLOT OF THE MOVIE:-
The plot of the movie is as same as the novel. From novel to movie the center story is the same while in the movie sometimes some scenes are exaggerate. And in the novel we have to understand what the particular dialogue say. According to IMDB, When the brilliant but unorthodox scientist Dr. Victor Frankenstein rejects the artificial man that he has created, the Creature escapes and later swears revenge. For to know the plot of the movie Click here. For to know what is difference between novel and movie Click here .
This movie is directed by Kenneth Branagh. Screenplay by Steph Lady and Frank Darabont. Produced by Francis Ford Coppola, James V. Hart and John Veitch. Distributed by TriStar Pictures. Released in November 3, 1994 (London Film Festival) and November 4, 1994 (United States).
Character of the novel or movie is the most important thing in it. So let's have a look on character or star cast of the movie.

MAIN CAST OR CHARACTER OF THE MOVIE:-
🌼 VICTOR FRANKENSTEIN:-
Kenneth Branagh

🌼 CREATURE:-
Robert De Niro

🌼 ELIZABETH LAVENZA:-
Helena Bonham Carter

🌼DR. HENRY CLERVAL:-
Tom Hulce

🌼 CAPTAIN WALTON:-
Aidan Quinn

🌼 ALPHONSE FRANKENSTEIN:-
Sir Ian Holm Cuthbert

🌼 DOCTOR WALDMAN:-
John Cleese

🌼 WILLIAM FRANKENSTEIN:-
Ryan Smith

🌼 PROFESSOR KREMPE:-
Robert Hardy

MOVIE ADAPTATIONS OF THE NOVEL:- (Click here For more information by The Guardian)
A novel considered very famous when everyone likes to read it. Or sold out in huge numbers. But in this time a person don't like to read books can also know what is the plot or story of the novel by watching movies. Of course every movies has some exceptions and some scenes are apart from original novel. For the expression of the dialogues movie is a good option but if you want to know really what writer want to say to us to watch novel is considerable. So let's look some adaptations of the novel Frankenstein.

❄️IGOR (2008):-
In this time we we can see so many examples of the adaptations of the novel but this adaptation of the novel is in cartoonic way. All evil scientists have hunchbacked assistants called Igor in this sub-Tim Burton animation full of Frankenstein references.(The Guardian)

❄️MARRY SHELLEY'S FRANKENSTEIN (1994):-
This adaptation of the novel consider as a famous and more related plot and story of the novel Frankenstein Original text. Kenneth Branagh directed and stars in this po-faced gothic tosh as a mittel-European medical student who strips down to reveal unfeasibly well-toned abs as he leaps around his lab, marinading his monster in a giant fish kettle.(The Guardian)

❄️DEPRAVED (2019):-
The indie horror honcho Larry Fessenden’s take on the Frankenstein story begins with an amnesiac stabbing victim waking up in a makeshift Brooklyn lab with a stitched-together body. The PTSD-afflicted ex-military medic who revived him tries to educate his creation in all things beautiful, but his partner has less elevated plans for the creature. Good characters, lo-fi psychedelia, sadness, doom.(The Guardian)

❄️ FRANKENSTEIN (1931):-
As the 1994 movie on Frankenstein this movie is also famous or I can say earlier famous movie based on Frankenstein novel by Mary Shelley. “It’s alive!” No sooner has Henry Frankenstein (not yet a baron) cobbled together a creature from bits of cadaver than he wanders off to get married – apparently suffering from mad-scientist ADHD – leaving the monster to throttle Frankenstein’s assistants and drown a little girl before a fiery finale. Boris Karloff, of course, does wonders in a wordless role beneath Jack Pierce’s quintessential makeup. Whale’s Frankenstein movie was not the first (there were at least three silents, including a 1910 short from Edison Studios), but it interpreted Shelley’s story with a visionary magic that casts its spell over the horror genre to this day. (The Guardian)

All these and other adaptation of the novel Frankenstein has similarities and differentiation from each other even though every adaptations and novel are as famous as eachother.

SENCES FROM THE MOVIE FRANKENSTEIN (1994):-
⭐(Source:-TPOTOishere)
This secen about the bride of the creature, like how Frankenstein is desperate to alive Elizabeth after her death and how creature demanding her as his bride. And in this fight between Victor and creature have Elizabeth kill herself with the fire is very Pathetic and pitiful scene.

⭐(Source:-Movieclips)
This is the last scene of the movie and the best heart touchable scene of the movie. How creature cry on the death of Victor and how he fire up himself with victor's burning ashes.

⭐(Source:-Movieclips)
This is the very first interesting scene of the movie while Victor try to make creature and try to alive him.

This is some famous and interesting scene of the movie which I considered notable.
